Character Canon History: In the year 2054, the First Close Encounter War occurred when a wave of gigantic aliens landed on Earth, laying waste to large areas and metropolitan centres across the world. Hattie was caught up in this initial wave; her parents were killed and she was badly injured, falling into a coma afterwards. This coma lasted around five years. When she finally woke, her grandfather assumed guardianship of her and took her to live on his property in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Hattie lived happily there, far away from the stresses of city life and the reminders of everything she lost in the Close Encounter War, learning her grandfather's stories of elves and fairies.

In 2059, a scientist named Noguchi initiated a plan to learn more about the aliens that continued to attack Earth by reviving one cobbled together from a motley collection of parts. His project was arguably a success, culminating in the resurrection of the hulking robot he called Frank, but military intervention at the last moment resulted in the deaths of Noguchi and nearly all his staff. Frank disappeared in the ensuing chaos, fleeing the scene for the wilds where he could hide. It was there, at a lake deep in the foothills of the Rockies, that Hattie and Frank met. She instantly fell in love with the giant she called Mister Elf, not realising that their meeting would change her life utterly – and not necessarily for the better.

When the paramilitary organisation called FUNERAL arrived, tracking Frank, an alien made planetfall as well. A battle between the alien and FUNERAL ensued; to protect Hattie from the crossfire, Frank intervened, killing the alien far more quickly and effectively than could FUNERAL even in their state of the art aerial combat mecha. Frank and Hattie then fled the scene at Hattie's request and continued running from FUNERAL for a day or two more, until finally, both were too exhausted. FUNERAL collected them and Hattie began her new life as a resident of the FUNERAL base, where she became indisposable once it was learned that Frank could only be controlled and used as a weapon against the aliens with Hattie as an intermediary. Her stay had an extremely rocky start with several mishaps and near-disasters and only really began improving once the FUNERAL commander, Laura Ines, took Hattie to live with her in off-base housing, realising that Hattie's worsening nightmares were a result of feeling alone in the face of terrifying and triggering events. Ines became a foster mother to Hattie, providing Hattie with the family she needed to begin healing properly.

Character Personality: Hattie is innocent in every sense of the word, a gentle and fragile soul surrounded by the horrors of a war waged against seemingly implacable foes. She's shy but innately trusting, only having learned suspicion by trial and error, and forever in need of friends and company. She's not always a good judge of character on first blush, too young to know better, but can't be fooled continually for long. Her grandfather taught her a lot about people and she relies on his advice to guide her until she reaches a point where she thinks she can trust her own judgement. He also taught her what she believes about fairies – that fairies were once normal people who grew tired of living as humans and turned into fairies and elves, and journeyed far away to the Land of the Fairies. This, she believes, is where her mother and father now wait for her.

Fear and love really shape her view of the world in general. She has no capacity for true hatred – she rarely even gets angry, and that not for very long – but she's wary of many things: strangers, new situations, people in uniform. But whatever doesn't frighten her, she loves with the deep and pure adulation of a child. Above all, she loves her grandpa, and second to him are her dog, Walton, and the alien Frank, whom she affectionately calls Mister Elf. Frank is her saviour, the pivot on which she rests her hopes and dreams; she relies on his presence to keep her world "right". Following the death of her grandfather, it's Frank who makes the monsters in her life disappear and without him, the world becomes a large and very terrible place. Her love for him can easily be used to talk her into doing things and going places she ordinarily wouldn't but will brave for the sake of her beloved Mister Elf.

When motivated as such, she is actually a very courageous little girl, if a touch oblivious to danger sometimes. She'll climb into a fighter jet and think nothing of the combat going on around and below her because all of her focus is on cheering for her friend.

Character Abilities: Hattie has no special powers or physical abilities beyond the average for a skinny 13-year-old human girl. She does have a small piece of alien metal lodged in her brain that, in canon, allows her speech to be heard on the same radio wavelength that the alien "Frank" uses.

Interaction Sample: [We ask for one thread of interaction with at least one other character with ten comments from your character minimum. There will be a test drive meme open before each application round, but bakerstreet, dear_mun, and previous game threads all count if you prefer to use those for your interactive sample, so long as they are threads for the specific version of the character you're applying for.]

Third Person Sample:
The autumn chill in the air is nothing for Hattie, not after a winter in the mountains with Grandpa. She runs across the park fields with her arms still bare, kicking through drifts of bright red and orange leaves that crunch underfoot just like they ought to, and laughs at the stray dogs that run with her. None of them is Walton, but that's okay, she decided weeks ago. Walton is back home with Sue and Commander Ines, but he'll be here with her someday; that's just how fairyland is.

In the meantime, she'll keep all these other dogs company until their friends finally get here. It seems like hours that she's in the park, running back and forth, racing through browning grass, until she finally stops and sprawls to catch her breath. Most of the dogs eventually wander off when they tire of waiting for her, some after pausing to sniff her with their noses. One stays, a big, scruffy grey thing. She's as tall at the shoulder as Walton but leaner, with a wiry coat that tickles Hattie's arm when she lies down beside the girl. Hattie giggles, then snuggles up closer against the big dog. No, definitely not Walton, with his big body and soft, thick fur. But the dog likes her and she likes the dog, who seems to be awfully lonely.

"I bet you miss your friend," she murmurs to the big dog, whose ears flick at the sound of her voice. Hattie smiles and sits up a little, curling against the dog's shoulders and wrapping her arms around that long, powerful neck. "I know!" she says. "I'll sing you my favourite song. It always cheers me up when I'm lonely!"

And sing she does, a song much older than she, in a high and clear voice that carries across the field.
